Buying a boat can be one of the most exciting events in life.
With such a significant financial commitment comes the responsibility of making a good choice.
A Pre-purchase Survey will closely examine the boat and advise you of her condition and potential liabilities.
All boats deteriorate in water - it's the nature of the environment!
A Condition Survey is not as comprehensive as a Pre-purchase Survey but will provide the owner with advice about aspects of maintenance that should be addressed for the longevity of the craft as well as assuring Insurance companies that the craft is in good condition
A survey on land can only tell so much. The prospective buyer may ask the owner or Broker for a Sea Trial (this may not necessarily take place in open water and may be on a canal)
A Sea Trial provides the opportunity to see the craft in action.
Hull surveys are carried out on steel craft on a periodic basis in order to satisfy the owner and Insurance Companies of the continued good condition of the boat, or as part of a pre-purchase assessment.
The survey will only cover aspects that are normally below, or close to the waterline.
When a Hull Survey has been carried out within the previous year or so, a potential buyer of a steel boat may choose to accept this as adequate proof that the hull is in good condition. In these circumstances, an In-Water Survey my be appropriate. This is, in effect, a Pre-Purchace Survey so far as it is possible with the craft afloat.
What Floats Your Boat Marine Surveys is authorised and approved by the IIMS as the Certifying Authority to carry out Tonnage Measurements of vessels upto 24m. This is a requirement of application for MCA Pt1 Registration.
