A survey on land can only tell so much. The prospective buyer may ask the owner or Broker for a Sea Trial (this may not necessarily take place in open water and may be on a canal). This provides the opportunity of seeing the craft in action.
The presence of a surveyor can act as an independent person who is able to direct questions and make assessments of the engine and equipment.

What Floats Your Boat Marine Surveys will carry out the survey to the best of our ability and within the limitation of access and reasonable tests available. Surveyors carry out non-destructive tests in sample areas and cannot guarantee that latent faults or those that are not reasonably accessible will be noted. It should also be noted that the survey does not provide nor ensure compliance with national or international requirements.
A Sea Trial does not guarantee the condition of the engine or other system beyond that which can be reasonably assessed without dismantling of destructive testing.
See Terms and Conditions for a more full explanation of limitations
